Meme Games to Play With Friends (Checked October 2026)

Three formats, six games compared from their official pages, and a five-minute version you can run in any chat with no app at all.

Disclosure: We make Lore, the meme app for your group chat, so it is one of the games below. Every fact about the other games comes from their own official pages, checked October 23, 2026. We did not sample reviews or rank the games.

What counts as a meme game

A meme game gives a group a picture or a situation, asks everyone for a funny caption, and lets the group decide the winner. Most fall into three formats.

  • Round-based games. A room, a template and a set number of rounds. Everyone captions, then the group votes or a judge picks. Make it Meme and We Meme add timers; Cap That uses a rotating judge.
  • Physical cards. You sit together with a deck. What Do You Meme? is a card game from Relatable.
  • Asynchronous swipe-and-vote. Nobody waits for a round. People post and vote whenever they open the game. Lore works this way, with no rounds or timers.

The format matters more than the brand. A timed game is great when six people are on a call and frustrating when your friends are in four time zones.

How a caption-and-vote round works

Round-based games share six beats.

  1. Template. The game shows a meme template or photo.
  2. Timer. Players write a caption against a clock. We Meme shows a default of 40 seconds to think; Make it Meme describes a short timer.
  3. Reveal. All captions appear together, so nobody copies.
  4. Vote. Players pick a favorite. We Meme’s default vote window is 45 seconds, and you vote by clicking a caption.
  5. Points. Votes become points. In We Meme they add to the caption author’s score.
  6. Winner. The most points after the last round wins. We Meme lets you choose 5, 10 or 15 rounds.

Make it Meme also lists a Relaxed mode with no points.

Pick by group: four common situations

  • Everyone is online at once. Make it Meme (2 to 30 players), or We Meme for a quick browser game from a link.
  • A private room of 3 to 10. Cap That, where a rotating judge picks each round’s winner.
  • A group chat spread across time zones. Skip the clock. Try the no-app version below, or an asynchronous game like Lore.
  • Same room, no screens. The What Do You Meme? cards.

A five-minute meme game with no app

These are our own house rules, so they work in any chat.

  1. The host posts one image or situation.
  2. Entries are due by a set time and go to the host privately.
  3. The host posts every entry, numbered, in random order, with no names.
  4. Each person votes for one favorite that is not their own.
  5. Most votes wins.
  6. Tie: vote again on the tied entries only, and the tied authors abstain.
  7. The winner hosts the next round.
Paste into your chat

Meme round! Prompt: [image or situation]. DM me your caption by 8pm. I’ll post them numbered at 8. Vote with one number (not your own) by 9.

Scoring. One vote is one point, or use a 3-2-1 ranked ballot. First to 10 points wins the night. Group size. With 2 or 3 people use a judge, with 4 to 8 use voting, and with 9 or more use a shared link game with a vote timer. The full rulebook is in how to run a caption contest in your group chat.

Where Lore fits (and where it does not)

We make Lore, so read this as a product description, not a verdict. Lore is a free browser game. Open the link, type the name your friends call you, and you are in, with no email or password. To start a room you type a room name, then send the invite link to your group chat. Describe what happened, pick one of 10 built-in formats, and Lore suggests captions that use your room’s names and running jokes. Then everyone swipes: right to laugh, left to pass, up to crown, with 3 crowns a day. A daily battle gives the room one format and prompt, and the winner is crowned at 9pm on each person’s phone.

Honest limits: Lore has no live rounds, timers or judge, no photo upload (friends show up as colored initials), and the browser version cannot save a meme image. The iPhone and Android apps are coming soon. If you want timed live rounds or your own photos, pick one of the games above. One more limit, checked October 23, 2026: in the current browser version a room may stay on the phone that made it, so check that a friend can see your meme before you plan a game around it.

FAQ

What is the best meme game to play with friends?

It depends on how your group plays. For timed rounds with a big group, Make it Meme supports up to 30 players in the browser and its apps. For a private room of 3 to 10 with a rotating judge, Cap That. For an asynchronous swipe-and-vote you can play whenever you open it, Lore is a browser option. Facts as stated on each official page, checked October 23, 2026.

Do you need to download an app to play a meme game with friends?

Not always. Make it Meme, We Meme, Cap That and Lore all play in a browser. Make it Meme and Cap That also have iPhone apps, and Make it Meme has an Android app. Lore’s iPhone and Android apps are coming soon.

Do meme games need an account?

Make it Meme says you can play without an account, though an account unlocks friends, stats and custom templates. Lore asks only for a name, with no email or password. The pages checked for We Meme and Cap That did not state account requirements.

How many players do you need for a meme game?

Make it Meme needs at least two and allows up to 30. Cap That private rooms hold 3 to 10. We Meme and Lore do not state a range on the pages checked. In Lore you cannot vote on your own meme, so voting needs at least one other person.
